Sovereign Hill, set on over 25 hectares, is a recreated goldfields township on a site which forms part of the richest alluvial goldfields the world has ever seen. On offer are a range of activities which are carried out by costume clad staff and volunteers who try to convey the behaviours and prejudices of the 1850's. There are countless things to see and do at Sovereign Hill including the Red Hill Gully Diggings where you can pan for real gold, there are more than 50 working horses and craftsmen exemplifying 1850s trades. There is a 10 minutes, self-guided underground adventure tour of the Red Hill Mine which uncovers the discovery of the 69kg Welcome Nugget which is the second largest gold nugget ever found. Enjoy regular demonstrations and street theatre performances as well as 1850s style shopping.
