South Australia, producing 60% of Australia wine truly is the wine state. It is home to world-famous regions such as the Barossa, McLaren Vale, or Coonawarra. But what you may be surprised to learn is that you can meet many of our expert winemakers at wineries and cellar doors throughout South Australia. You'll get to see the faces behind the labels, and talk about the craft they love.

South Australia has a vast range of wine experiences on offer and you don’t even need to leave Adelaide. In Adelaide you’ll find the National Wine Centre, you will also find Penfold’s Magill Estate – home to the highly sought-after Penfolds Grange.

But getting out into the fresh country air and experiencing the regions first hand is so easy, the Adelaide Hils are 20 minutes from the city centre, and the McLaren Vale only 45 minutes. The Barossa Valley, only an hours drive from Adelaide, is one of Australia’s most well known wine regions and produces some of the country’s finest wines and most famous, such as Jacob’s Creek. It’s also home to Australia’s oldest family-owned winery, Yalumba and some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world. There are many great ways to enjoy the Barossa, you can even become a wine maker for a day, you can ‘make your own blend’ at Penfolds or for a different view of the Barossa, try a balloon or helicopter flight over the vineyards and ranges.

Which ever direction you are headed in South Australia you can combine a wine experience, on the Melbourne to Adelaide touring route you can call in at the Coonawarra, a wine region known for its luscious reds and for the rare terra rossa soil in which there vines grow. Heading north of Adelaide on the way to the Flinders Ranges you have the Clare Valley. The Clare Valley is regarded as the home of Australian Riesling. Its oldest vines are at Sevenhill Cellars which was founded by the Jesuits in 1848 to make altar wine. A great way to experience the Clare Valley is the 25 kilometre Riesling Trail, its a cycling and walking route that links heritage townships, cellar doors, attractions and the Valley’s richly varied landscapes.
