In South Australia you'll see native wildlife in its natural habitat from whales, wild dolphins, sea lions and penguins to echidnas, wombats, koalas, kangaroos, wallabies and more.
South Australia is considered to have the most accessible wildlife in Australia. It's one of the few places you can swim with wild sea-lions and dolphins, walk down eucalyptus-lined lanes spotting koalas, and see groups of kangaroos grazing the land.
Don't miss Kangaroo Island, Australia’s answer to the Galapagos. Flinders Chase National Park has stunning coastal landscapes, vast areas of wilderness and diversity of wildlife. And Seal Bay Conservation Park is home to a colony of wild Australian Sea-lions - one of the few places in the world where these animals are relatively tolerant of people.
And Kangaroo Island isn’t the only place to see wildlife in its natural habitat, you’ll find it everywhere in South Australia. Each year, from October to June, Southern Right Whales gather in South Australian waters to breed and raise their young. They can be spotted along the coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula or at Head of Bight.
In the Flinders Ranges you will find the rare Yellow- Footed Rock Wallaby in the Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges, eagles soaring on the mountain thermals and galahs and cockatoos flock at sunset. The Flinders Ranges is also one of the best places to find reptiles such as Blue Tongue Lizards, Thorny Devils, Frill Neck Lizards and goannas.
But you don't have to travel far from the Adelaide to encounter wildlife. You can cuddle a koala, swim with dolphins at beachside Glenelg, or taking a nocturnal tour of Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary, where you’ll see bilbies, bettongs and bandicoots in their natural habitat and all within an hour of the city.
