Queensland Coast and Cairns
Our camping adventure heads north out of Sydney and along the coast to Coffs Harbour. We then travel up the coast to the laid-back resort of Byron Bay before hitting the bright lights of Surfers Paradise.
Picking up our 4WD, we explore Moreton Island with the world’s highest sand dunes and miles of deserted beaches. We hike the trails through the inland forests and look at the shipwrecks before swimming in the Blue Lagoon.
We continue up the coast into the Tropics and spend time at beautiful Airlie Beach – the gateway to the Whitsundays and to some of the most picturesque sailing in the world.
We have 2 nights at Mission Beach where there are plenty of adventurous activities such as white water rafting or tandem sky-diving or visit Dunk Island for some rainforest hiking.
We make our ways up to Cairns for a full day sailing cruise to the Outer Barrier Reef where you can try scuba diving (no experience needed), hand-feed the fish or snorkel amongst the vibrant coral.
Outback bound
Travelling over the Great Dividing Range, we pass through typical Aussie Outback towns and tour the ‘Flying Doctor Museum’ in Cloncurry. After passing through the mining tour of Mount Isa, we depart Queensland and cross the border into the Northern Territory. We head north to Katherine Gorge where you can take a cruise up two spectacular gorges before arriving at Litchfield National Park. We camp near the waterfalls and there is time for a swim at Florence Falls before heading back to civilisation in Darwin and a real bed in the YHA.
There is plenty to see on your free day in Darwin or simply relax by the pool. The next stop is the ‘World Heritage Listed’ Kakadu National Park – one of Australia’s most beautiful areas of wilderness. At Kakadu, we marvel at the ancient Aboriginal rock art at Nourlangie Rock and watch the sunset or take a cruise on the Yellow Water Billabong where you can spot crocodiles, birds and snakes!
We join the locals to try some ‘Bush Tucker’ and learn how to throw a spear or make a fire. There is time for a swim at Mataranka Hot Springs after setting up camp.
Tennant Creek and Red Centre
Heading south we visit the gold mining town of Tennant Creek before arriving at the eerie Devils Marbles in time for sunset where you can take a short hike or some stunning photographs. The following day we travel through the Western MacDonnell ranges where you can see Simpson’s Gap or hike around Ormiston Gorge. We continue onto Alice Springs where we set up camp before heading into town for a meal and some nightlife.
Leaving Alice Springs, we head for the Red Centre where we visit Kings Canyon and hike over the Lost City and Garden of Eden before arriving at our final camp at Ayers Rock Resort in time for sunset. The following day we do a guided tour around the base of Ayers Rock and learn about the Aboriginal legends that abound in this area. We then have time to explore Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and view the sunset before our final night of camping at Ayers Rock. On our last morning, there is time for an early morning photo-stop at Uluru before we return to Alice Springs.
