Located in the heart of the ruggedly spectacular northern Flinders Ranges 600 km north of Adelaide, Arkaroola consists of 610 square kilometres of privately owned wilderness sanctuary offering guests ease of access to many sheltered waterholes, deep plunging gorges, and breathtaking mountaintop views of vast desert plains and distant salt lakes. From a comfortable base, visitors need only travel short distances to experience the profound silences of outback Australia, or observe native wildlife in their natural habitat. A wide range of Advanced Ecotourism accredited tours are available, including the world-famous Ridgetop Tour, Arkaroola's signature 4WD tour. Travelling in specially constructed open-top 4WD vehicles, Ridgetop passengers are taken on a guided tour of some of the most spectacularly rugged country on earth. Trained tour guides share their knowledge of Arkaroola's 1600-million year geological history as they navigate the steep slopes and hair raising ascents of the famous Ridgetop Track. We also offer Astronomical Tours of the magnificent Southern Hemisphere skies with our three professionally equipped observatories. With some of the best astronomical seeing conditions in Australia, tours of the universe offer views not usually available to the public. Our astronomical equipment includes two 360mm Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes, Star Chairs fitted with powerful astro binoculars, all being available for hire to the public We also offer a range of other 4WD tours and guided nature drives and walks. We have a range of accommodation options including our 3.5 star Mawson Lodge motel accommodation, ensuite backpacker rooms, fully self-contained cottages, a caravan park and 300 hectares of camping grounds. Our guest rooms at Mawson Lodge have spectacular mountain views, ensuite bathroom facilities, air-conditioning, fridge, television and tea and coffee making facilities.
