FLIGHT PRICE INDEX

The Definitive International Flight Guide To Australia

October 2007

The Flight Price Index, from www.australiatravelmarket.com, monitors scheduled airlines’ international flight fares to Australia in order to chart and predict booking trends:

BEST FARES

1. STA has the cheapest fare bookable online to Australia for departures from London Heathrow of £628 flying on Qantas during May and June 2008.

2. Airline Network has the best fare bookable online to Australia for departures from Manchester of £633 flying on Qantas for departures in May and June 2008.

3. Airline Network has the best fare bookable online to Australia for departures from Glasgow of £633 flying on Qantas during May 2008.

WWW.AUSTRALIATRAVELMARKET.COM PREDICTS:

1. Due to the current Air Services Agreement between Australia and the USA, only Qantas and United Airlines fly non-stop from Australia to the US as many airlines consider the restrictions limiting the number of flights between the two countries to be uneconomic. However, hot on the heels of the recent ‘open skies’ agreement between the UK and the US, the Australian and US governments are set to have talks later this year to discuss a comprehensive open skies policy which would allow Australian and US carriers to determine the frequency, routes and prices of flights themselves. This is of particular interest to Virgin Blue who has submitted an application to commence 10 services a week to the USA with its new long-haul subsidiary, V Australia. www.australiatravelmarket.com predicts that an open skies policy between Australia and the USA would be a fantastic boost to increase inbound tourism into Australia and would give passengers a great choice of new flight routes between Australia and the USA at competitive prices.

2. Low Cost travel is certainly causing a storm in Australia with new airline Tiger Airways, a subsidiary of Qantas rival Singapore Airlines, set to begin Australian domestic flights in November. With aggressive pricing starting at AU$14.95 for a one-way fare between Launceston and the Gold Coast, www.australiatravelmarket.com expects a price-war to start imminently. Low Cost travel between Australia and Asia is also set for a boom with Jetstar launching a thrice-weekly service between Australia and Kuala Lumpur and Tiger expanding their Australia to Singapore route to include Melbourne in addition to the existing Darwin and Perth flights. It has been reported that Darwin airport is experiencing a midnight crush as a result of the popularity of Australia’s low cost airlines. Its estimated that over 2000 passengers pass through the airport in the middle of every night whilst the airlines take advantage of the economies of keeping their planes in the sky rather than parking them overnight!

3. The good news for online travel companies is that the percentage of young travellers booking their trips online has dramatically increased from 10% to 50% in just 5 years with 80% of young travellers using the internet for research before booking their arrangements (source: World Youth & Student Educational Travel Confederation). Amongst the most popular destinations for young travellers and backpackers alike are Australia and New Zealand with the average spend per trip up 40 per cent since 2002. www.australiatravelmarket.com certainly expects this upward trend to be sustained with more age groups realising the convenience and wealth of knowledge the online companies have to offer.

General

10. Overall there has been a general decrease in the price of flights from all airports over the next 11 months. April to June is traditionally regarded as low season for flights from the UK to Australia due to the Australian winter months and the competitive pricing reflects this.
11. Qantas in conjunction with STA and Japan Airlines in conjunction with Thomas Cook have the most competitive fares for flights operating to Sydney from Heathrow. Qantas in conjunction with Airline Network and Emirates in conjunction with Thomas Cook are dominating the market with the cheapest fares departing from Manchester and Glasgow.
