FLIGHT PRICE INDEX The Definitive International Flight Guide to Australia OCTOBER 2006 The Flight Price Index, from www.australiatravelmarket.com, monitors the scheduled airlines’ international flight fares to Australia in order to chart and predict booking trends as following: BEST FARES 1. Malaysian Airlines and Thomas Cook have the best fare for travel to Australia from the UK over the next eleven months with departures during May 2007 priced at £516 from Heathrow. 2. Qantas and Travelbag have the cheapest prices for departures from Manchester. Departures during May and June 2007 will cost £625. 3. Qantas and Thomas Cook have the cheapest airfare for departures from Glasgow. Departures during May 2007 will cost £616. WWW.AUSTRALIATRAVELMARKET.COM PREDICTS: 4. As predicted in the September FPI, the market benefited from some aggressive seat sales from the likes of Singapore Airlines, Qantas and Emirates. It is understood that the seat sales generated strong sales for the airlines ‘topping up’ load factors for travel during traditionally softer months of April and May. 5. It is predicted that the airlines will keep prices at current levels between now and Xmas, with new seat sales hitting the market around Boxing Day. These seat sales are likely to target departure dates for travel between April – June 2007. 6. Traditionally Malaysian Airlines have lead the way with seat sales and aggressive lead in prices for travel to Australia. However given recent initiatives implemented to increase profitability it is predicted that Malaysian Airlines may be somewhat restricted as to the prices they are able to put into the market during the January sales. Will this result in other airlines not having to discount as much as they have in previous years? PDF created with pdfFactory Pro trial version www.pdffactory.com 7. Given the significant delayed launch of the new Airbus A380 (Singapore Airlines was due to have an inaugural flight of the A380 from London to Sydney in December), it is predicted that the travelling public may over the next 12 – 18 months begin to notice slightly aging aircraft and on board product as airlines have to delay the retirement of aging aircraft on these long haul routes. TRENDS IN SEPTEMBER 8. As predicted in the September FPI, flights from London Heathrow have all increased for all future months departures with the biggest increase happening in March 2007 with a 9.38% from £693 to £758 9. Qantas continues to dominate lead in pricing for regional departures for all future months. Australia Travel Market predicts that Emirates may yet seek to regain the lead in this battle. 10. The biggest price increase in price is for the month July 2007 from Glasgow with an average increase of 28.12% from £939 to £1203. 11. Thomas Cook, a new addition to the Australia Travel Market in recent months, dominates lead in prices for all future months’ departures. 12. January is currently the most expensive month to travel from the UK to Australia with average prices in excess of £1,000 13. For the first time since the launch of the FPI Gulf Air and Korean Airlines have featured as providing lead in prices from London.
