FLIGHT PRICE INDEX

The Definitive International Flight Guide To Australia

November 2007

The Flight Price Index, from www.australiatravelmarket.com, monitors scheduled airlines’ international flight fares to Australia in order to chart and predict booking trends:

BEST FARES

1. Orbitz has the cheapest fare bookable online to Australia for departures from London Heathrow of £630 flying on Virgin Atlantic during May 2008.

2. Airline Network has the best fare bookable online to Australia for departures from Manchester of £636 flying on Qantas for departures in May and June 2008.

3. Airline Network has the best fare bookable online to Australia for departures from Glasgow of £636 flying on Qantas during May and June 2008.

WWW.AUSTRALIATRAVELMARKET.COM PREDICTS:

1. Australian low-cost carrier Virgin Blue has announced plans to refit their entire domestic fleet with Premium Economy seats. The red leather seats will offer a seat pitch of 34 inches with a 2:2 configuration - all seats will have direct aisle or window access. Additional Premium Economy benefits will include priority check-in, an increased baggage allowance of 32k and airline lounge access. With the huge success of Virgin Atlantics Premium Economy product www.australiatravelmarket.com predicts that Virgin Blue’s competitors have good reason to be worried.

2. Aviation history was made when the new Airbus A380, the largest aircraft ever to be built, touched down in Sydney last month. There were rave reviews from passengers and journalists alike who were impressed with the lavish interior and sheer space onboard the Singapore Airlines double-decker jet. The first class cabin features private suites with full size double beds and large bathrooms with ‘Hollywood-style’ lighting and fittings. www.australiatravelmarket.com has learnt that there is no truth in the rumours that Singapore Airlines have tried to lure Ralph Fiennes away from his position as unofficial ambassador at Qantas…….

3. It is hoped that the arrival of the new A380 will help Australia achieve its growth targets in visitor arrivals - a whopping 61 per cent over the next ten years. Certainly an increase in airline capacity will be needed in order to facilitate the growth and it is likely that a significant increase in available seats will result in competitive fares which in turn will stimulate demand.. Asia and the Middle East are among the fastest growing tourism markets for Australia and with a phenomenal total of 165 A380s on order (Emirates with 47 alone!), www.australiatravelmarket.com predicts a new chapter in the airline industry.

TRENDS IN JULY

London Heathrow

1. Flights departing from London Heathrow have slightly increased in price by an average of +3.18% for the forthcoming months.
2. The main price increase for future months is for departures in December 2007 which are up by +15.04% from £991 to £1140 – this no doubt reflects the demand for the popular pre-Christmas exodus to Australia!
3. May 2008 has the largest price decreases of -4.09% with an average price of £703 which is down from last months average of £733 for the same departure period.

Manchester

4. Flights departing Manchester have marginally increased in price by an average of +0.32% for future months.
5. April 2008 has seen the largest decrease in price from £944 to £843 with an average decrease of –10.7%.
6. The largest increase in price is for departures in February 2008 with an average increase of 7.53% with prices rising from £1009 to £1085 on average

Glasgow

7. Overall flights have increased in price from Glasgow to Sydney by +5.48% for all future months.
8. The largest average price increase from Glasgow is in April 2008 with an increase of +12.24% from £858 to £963.
9. There were no average price decreases for the forthcoming months however average prices for travel in December 2007 were on a par with last months figures.

General

10. Overall there has been a general increase in the price of flights from all airports over the next 11 months. There are signs that prices have particularly increased during the traditionally popular times to fly to Australia such as December. Prices still remain very competitive during the quieter months of May and June
11. Etihad in conjunction with Airline Network and Opodo and Virgin in conjunction with Orbitz have the most competitive fares for flights operating to Sydney from Heathrow. Qantas and Emirates in conjunction with Airline Network and British Airways in conjunction with Ebookers are dominating the market with the cheapest fares departing from Manchester and Glasgow.
