JUNE 2006
The Flight Price Index, from www.australiatravelmarket.com, monitors the scheduled airlines’ international flight fares to Australia in order to chart and predict booking trends as following:

1. Fares for travel in April 2007 will continue to fall dramatically over the next three to four months and we strongly recommend holding off booking for travel in this period.
2. Flight prices for November and December will continue to increase as seat availability becomes increasingly restricted. Average fares for November and December departures increased by 16% and 15% respectively with average fares for December now costing £1,002 compared with £868 in May.
3. There will be a Scottish flight price war between Qantas and Emirates. Qantas needs to fill additional capacity by increasing its customer base. Given that Emirates offers direct flights from Glasgow it is unlikely that they will sit back and watch Qantas steal market share with aggressive pricing. It will be interesting to watch this battle for the Scottish market evolve. Needless to say it is the Scottish travelling public who will be the real winners. (see point 7)
TRENDS IN JUNE
4. Flight prices to Sydney increased between April and May with overall average prices from all airports increasing by £64, from £978 to £1,042. Much of this increase can be attributed to the cheap fares that were available last month for travel in June and the continued application of significant fuel surcharges by airlines.
5. The largest average price reduction occurred for departures in April 2007 where prices from London, Machester and Glasgow dropped by an average of £110 to £1,001.
6. £717 is the cheapest 2006 flight price from any UK airport to Sydney. This is for November departures on Qantas from London with Ebookers or Travelbag.
7. Qantas has decided to challenge Emirates’ position as the Scottish-friendly carrier by significantly reducing fares from Glasgow. Qantas now has the best fare to Australia from Glasgow - £826 departing in September.
8. Singapore Airlines is notable for offering significantly cheaper air fares on its own website. The differences can sometimes be as much as £200 for the same flight. This represents a significant change in traditional relationships between airlines and distribution partners. BA has led the way in this change, but the question is how long will it be before other carriers follow suit?
