FLIGHT PRICE INDEX The Definitive International Flight Guide To Australia DECEMBER 2006 The Flight Price Index, from www.australiatravelmarket.com, monitors scheduled airlines’ international flight fares to Australia in order to chart and predict booking trends as following: BEST FARES 1. Thomas Cook have the best fare available from London Heathrow of £571 to Australia flying on Malaysia Airlines for May & June 2007 departures 2. Travelbag have the best fare available from Manchester of £696 to Australia flying on Qantas for May & June 2007 departures 3. Opodo have the best fare available from Glasgow of £712 to Australia flying on Qantas for May and June 2007 departures. WWW.AUSTRALIATRAVELMARKET.COM PREDICTS: 1. The Government’s recent hiking of the Airport Passenger Duty (APD) charge is outrageous. The Government, in their wisdom have decided to impose eye watering 100% increases on the APD using the justification of ‘protecting the environment’. However, www.australiatravelmarket.com predicts that the taxes generated from this highway robbery will simply disappear into the big black hole of Government beauracracy. 2. As a result of the hike in APD and other airport taxes, it is predicted that we will not see some of the ridiculously cheap headline air fares to Australia in the January seat sales that we may have seen in the past. The likes of £499 that have been witnessed in recent years as lead in fares will simply be unrealistic. 3 Finally, lets hope there are no disruptions at London Heathrow this holiday period. However given the track record it would be fairly easy to predict that something will happen in the lead up to Christmas. Maybe an industrial dispute? Perhaps baggage delays? Maybe airport closures? Lets hope not… TRENDS IN DECEMBER London Heathrow 1. Overall all flights departing London Heathrow have decreased in price by an average of 18.8% between November and December. 2. The largest decrease in price is May with an average price decrease of -17.86% from £728 down to £598. 3. July is the only month with an increase of 1.95% from £874 to £891 Manchester 4. Overall all flights departing Manchester have decreased in price by an average of 9.00% 5. The largest average price decrease from Manchester is in June with a decrease of 24.63% from £950 to £716 Glasgow 6. Overall all flights departing Glasgow for future months have decreased in price by an average of -13.33%. 7. Departing from Glasgow the biggest average decrease in price is in July with a decrease of 43.75% from £2025 to £1139. 8. The only month that flights have increased is in April where prices have increased from £1144 to £1172 General 9. Qantas has dominated the market this month for all future months from Manchester and Glasgow. 10. Thomas Cook has dominated the market departing from London Heathrow. 11. Thomas Cook and Opodo dominate the marketplace for all future months from London, Glasgow and Manchester. 12. January is currently the most expensive month for travel from the UK to Australia.
