Strahan
Once known for its notorious convict settlement on Sarah Island and located on Tasmania’s west coast, Strahan is now a major harbour town and a perfect base for visitors wishing to tour the wild wild coastline and World Heritage Area of this beautiful region of Tasmania.
With beautiful dune beaches, rivers and waterways, the area is ideal for all kinds of activities from dune boarding to gently paddling in a kayak to explore the beauty from the riverside.
There are cruises along the Macquarie Harbour, which measures 50 km. Or for a more adrenalin pumping water thrill, book a jet boat ride on King River and hold on tight!!
There is even the West Coast Wilderness Railway that runs all the way across the mountain range to Queenstown, providing a visual feast of stunning panoramic vistas during the journey that takes you through Tasmanian rainforest.
Ocean Beach is only 6km outside of Strahan Village and is Tasmania’s longest beach at over 30km in length. With its large dune area, Ocean Beach is ideal for a little 4WD fun as well as relaxing!
However, despite all of these attractions, Strahan is probably best known for its acres and acres of ancient Huon pine trees. The distinctive butter-yellow timber can be seen in local craft shops made into all sorts of artefacts by local artisans.
The town itself remains a fishing town with all the charm of a small working harbour. The Esplanade is the main street that curves around the harbour and is where Strahan’s activity is centred, with cafes, restaurants, galleries and a good choice of accommodation for visitors.
Getting to Strahan is easy, it is just under 300km north-west of Hobart by road.
Wild and beautiful, Strahan is yet another Tassie gem.
