Tropical Gulf Savannah

The Gulf Savannah area of northern Queensland is a vast, flat, sparsely populated landscape, best visited between June and September. Occupying around 186,000 sq km it is home to immense cattle stations, historic gold towns, spectacular gorges and some great fishing opportunities, and perhaps most famously to the Undara Lava Tubes.

These massive volcanic tubes were formed around 190,000 years ago after a volcanic eruption (lava flowed down a dry river bed and as the top layer cooled and hardened the flow beneath drained outwards leaving a series of long dark hollow tubes. Today they form the largest lava tube system in the world. For a truly unique experience, the accommodation at Undara is in beautifully restored turn of the century railway carriages.
