Proserpine is the administrative centre of the Whitsundays area, as well as the gateway for many visitors arriving at the train station or airport. 16 miles inland from Airlie Beach, it made its name from the cultivation of sugar and the cattle industry, and still has a functioning sugar mill. Prosperine Lake, upstream from the town, is the perfect place for sailing, watersports and fishing.
