Maria Island Walk - The
Location: PO Box 2054
Description: The Maria Island Walk is a four-day guided journey through stunning coastal and mountain landscapes on an island national park that is a wildlife refuge and has a fascinating history that spans convicts and the bold visions of the risk-taking Italian entrepreneur, Diego Bernacchi. The walk offers Tasmanian food and wines, accommodation in private beachfront camps and an overnight stay in the restored, heritage-listed Bernacchi House at the Darlington settlement.Maria Island is a national park and the walk provides easy adventure with two guides and a maximum of eight guests. The small groups ensure that there is considerable opportunity to experience both the pleasure of solitude in nature and the companionship of sharing the experience. The trip starts at Salamanca Place, Hobart, with a one-hour bus journey to Triabunna, and transfer to a charter boat to explore the Mercury Passage before starting the walk at Chinaman's Bay.The walk features secluded beaches, marine life, 15 different forest communities, the world's second most rare goose, endangered birds and at the northern tip of the island, a convict settlement that pre-dates Port Arthur Historic Site and features the reminders of triumph and tragedy in doomed silk, wine and cement manufacturing industries. The final day begins with an early morning stroll to see Maria`s world class Fossil Cliffs before you return to Hobart and a farewell drink in style at historic Salamanca Place. Airport drop-offs are available if required.Trips start on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from November to April. Walking times range from two-to-six hours a day, except for day three when there is an option to climb the spectacular peak of Bishop& Clerk (which is additional four hours return walk).Accolades: Winner of the 2005 Tasmanian Tourism Award, Adventure Tourism.
